For the beginner, the key component of Aran knitting is the Cable needle. This small needle with a bend in it is the tool which allows the knitter to carry stitches back and forth across the fabric. Using this tool in combination with the traditional knitting needles, it is possible to make every single possible Aran pattern. It is not necessary though. While visiting the islands, I was surprised to see a woman making a sweater WITHOUT using any cable needle!

All you really need are two single pointed needles. I made my first Aran sweater using the popular Susan Bates Quicksilver Needles. I also occasionally use Bamboo needles. If you have never used wooden needles its worth trying once because it is definately a different experience and you might find you prefer it to the metal needles.
